Our Molly

Molly is our sweet doggie, whom we got from the pound/rescue last August.  To look at her she is a Beagle, but on closer inspection she probably has a bit of Spaniel in her as well.  Mind you it’s the Beagle in her that directs her life.  She is never let off leash, as when she picks up a scent of something she’ll follow it with no regard for anything else in life.  Her nose is down and off she goes.

We have been lucky and she has only gone a wandering once since we have had her, and she went a frolicking in the woods for three hours, scaring her mummy half to death!!  I was so relieved but so angry when I finally caught up with her; and she still wouldn’t come to me when I shouted for her!!  She was still engrossed in whatever scent it was she was following.

I caught up to her and put her on leash and dragged her back home.  By this point she was worn out and refused to go under the fence, so I had to carry her over the fence…which by the way didn’t improve my mood!!  She was filthy, so of course had to go for a shower, which she hates with a passion!!

Which brings me to another point about Molly, she hates going outside if it’s raining.  We go to let her out and she refuses to go, so I have to put her on leash and stand out in the rain with her so she’ll pee and poop.  Do you see the word “Sucker,” written on my forehead!!

One thing about Molly we were not aware of when we brought her home is that she is allergic to most things in life.  Amongst the food allergies, are chicken, rice, wheat, carrots, and fish.  Five out of eight grasses that she was tested for she is allergic too.  Numerous trees, moulds, dust, oh and even cockroaches!!  All which make it quite a challenge trying to keep her comfortable.  We have her on a steroid daily, which although is not the best solution, it’s better than nothing and one which we can afford.  She is on special food, as most things contain things she is allergic too.  There is nothing we can do about the environment; she just has to get on with it.

Despite all these little things about her, we wouldn’t part with her.  She is a quiet dog and despite being a Beagle doesn’t howl very often.  She’ll be six in August, we think; they told us in the pound she was around five when we got her.  Her first year with us has gone by so fast.  Here’s hoping too many more years with us, Molly.
