Licorice |
When I saw someone asking for candy,
I thought the Vermont Country Store. It has a "Penny Candy"
section. I don't know if there might be something in there that might
help. I think there is a candy store in Littleton, NH that boasts of
the longest penny candy counter in the area. I forget the name of it,
I wonder if the city or town hall web sight would have it?

http://ilovelicorice.com/ The
lady named Edda at this site wrote me back
to say they had real licorice root candy. That it is very sweet
and not bitter or salty.

After I wrote to you I decided to buy a sampling of many licorice types from Dutch Sweets. The box arrived while I was on vacation to Ohio and Michigan and parts in-between. It was with great anticipation that I opened those various packages and started to sample my purchase. The first bite sent me scurrying for the sink over the garbage disposal. That piece was sooooo salty and bitter it curled my eyeteeth. The next one curled all the way to my toes. Needless to say, twenty four dollars later I am wiser to the fact that I do not like Dutch Licorice and to avoid anything in the licorice family from the Netherlands. When the pocket and taste shock wear off I might venture to trying some English Licorice. I fear that the makers of the licorice faded into the woodwork when the Woolworth chain store that used to sell those 'W' marked licorice buttons went out of business. |

The spice anise yields a flavor
that licorice-lovers will appreciate.
I found anise seed offered at these
sites:
It may be that a search for anise
will turn up better leads for licorice.

Even though licorice is a natural compound, it can still cause side effects. When used in large doses or for long periods, it might cause severe congestive heart failure, debilitating weakness, quadriplegia, increased blood pressure, or sexual dysfunction in men. It also can interact with medications. For example, combined with the heart drug digoxin, licorice can cause potassium levels to drop dangerously low, resulting in problems with heart rhythm. People with diabetes, hypertension, congestive heart disease, hypertonia, liver disease, renal insufficiency, hypokalemia, or sexual dysfunction should avoid using licorice. Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should also stay away from it. And anyone on prescriptive medicine should talk with their doctor before deciding to self-medicate with any over-the-counter remedy.
