Winter, apparently, is getting to everyone. Even Russell, Aaron's boss, throwing money at his stock, is still having problems with deaths. We had another calf die, and some guinea pigs, including two of Alice's favourites. I think one died of old age, it's hard to tell with cavies. Today, Alice is on the last day of the school holidays. Tomorrow, Term III begins. |
I rejoiced because she found a pair
of gumboots that will fit her rapidly growing feet at an Op. Shop for
$2, which means that she will no longer be complaining of how much her
feet hurt when she cleans out the guinea pig cage.
Meanwhile, the wattle is flowering in
full force, and on Sunday we took Betty, Brian's Mum, to the Hopkin's
Falls to see what the Winter rains have done. I photographed a
few angles, and hope you enjoy what Nita is kind enough to post.
We went down to Melbourne on Monday
and bought a cheap replacement ute for the marvellous one that died
recently. We will still have to get a roadworthy certificate on
this, and it needs a bit of work, but at least I am not putting
garbage bins full of dead take-aways and old vegetables in the back of
the sedan any more.
A bloke is supposed to be coming
for the piglets today and paying $200 for the privelege. They're
nice pigs, but I don't believe I'll miss them that much. We need
the money more, as Brian wants to go to Coleraine tomorrow for a
Clearing Sale and hopefully pick up a reasonably priced slasher for
the paddocks. The gentleman may also be buying some geese, which
would be wonderful.
I was looking through the July
edition of Warm Earth magazine, and they have, on page 39, a
wonderful article on Household and Health Hints - from 1904.
Here are some of them:
To clean copper: Use two tablespoons
of strong vinegar and one tablespoon of salt. Rub with this
mixture with a piece of flannel. Wash in clean hot water and dry
thoroughly.
Windows: Sprinkle a pad made of
newspaper with ammonia. Rub in the inside of your windows, and
you will not be troubled by flies.
To remove the smell of paint: Place a
handful of hay in a bucket of water, and let it stand in a newly
painted room.
Cut flowers may be kept fresh by
putting a spoonful of powdered charcoal into the vase. Do not
change the water.
Chapped hands: Wash the hands well in
warm water and soap, and after rinsing off the soap, take a small
portion of honey while the hands are still wet and rub it well in.
Let it stay on the hands for a short time then pat the hands dry with
a towel.
Lisa McInnes-Smith's latest quote:
"If you throw dirt at people all you do is lose ground."
City
Is it just me?
Have I been looking longingly at city
rentals
thnking
"No more complications"
A placid life, an easy life
everything available, just down the
street
I could live with the noise,
particularly if it was a cul-de-sac
I could live with the smell,
especially in clean Warrnambool
I could live with the increased
rental costs, we pay out in fuel anyway.
Ah me, but I know I love all of my
animals, and I love the birthings and their funny ways.
I think I'll stay. Just for a
short while. Maybe a decade or two.
