Learning to Cook by Debora Ohson
|
I am not sure I still know how to
cook. I did learn a little coming up...Momma was a school teacher so a
lot of times it was "catch as catch can..." But I learned how
to make biscuits from my Granny in Florida. I would stand on a stool at
her kitchen table and watch her. She was Indian and her
Great-grandfather had made a bread tray out of the trunk of a tree. She
would make a well in the middle of the flour after sifting the flour.
She would add oil and milk into the well. And then (to me) the fun began
as she mixed it all with her hands. After a few moments she would mold
small balls of dough into biscuit size and place them in neat rows on a
greased cookie sheet. In later years I watched Momma do the same thing
in the same bread tray. As a teenager I began " experimenting"
in the art of bread making. HA! I am now known as the "CATHEAD
champion" of the family. I have never managed to get my biscuits to
the little bitty pretty things my Momma or Granny made...so my Family
say that "Debora makes great buns."
Needless to say I could hang my head in shame OR (and this is what I chose to do.) I use my BUNS to feed the many children and folks that come through our home. They make fine breakfast sandwiches or any time sandwiches ;) I have one Brother-in-law who is an awesome cook...and when we are all together he will tell me the night before..."Deb, if you will make the biscuits I will do the rest" and we serve our family biscuits, gravy, fried potatoes, eggs, bacon, etc. A meal fit for KINGS and Queens!!! ********************************************* I also took Home Ec. in High School...YUCKY! I hated it. But then part of that was (looking back on it) because it was a culture shock as much as any thing. I had just moved from California to Tennessee...a lot of the cooking that we had done in California was different than Tennessee folks cook...so my teacher was very biased against me. I would tell her that we made grits with cheese and butter and ate it with fish for dinner. She would laugh at me and I was so embarrassed. She would say "the right way is with sugar and butter and eat at breakfast". Well, since then I have grown up and taught school myself...but I have never found a time to use her way of teaching anything...just because you do not do it my way does not mean that you are wrong!!! The Joy of learning NEW ways or DIFFERENT ways!!! I love to find new ways to do things...some times it is WAY EASIER than my way!!! In conclusion, I have learned to cook from watching others and then trying a lot on my own. I do enjoy cooking but most of my cooking is just enough to keep body and soul together. I am not fancy. But my husband of 24 years has not complained :)
