Learning to Cook

by Jan Jennrich

My first cooking adventures were when I was maybe 12 years old. I once decided to bake a chocolate cake in my Suzy Homemaker oven...and add a LOT of dark blue food coloring. Yuck (it was very gross looking)! Nobody wanted to eat it! Another time I used a cookbook to make scrambled eggs (is that like needing a recipe for making ice?). It said to add a teaspoon of salt, which I did. Needless to say, those weren't real popular either! A rough start, but I have improved a little since then.
