Homeschooling Journey

Part Ten

"feeding the bacteria and fungi"

One day, last week, I missed Alan. I went to the front door and called him. When he responded, I asked him, "Where are you?" he answered, "I'm over here". I asked him, "What are you doing?" and he said, "Oh, I'm just feeding the bacteria and fungi". Stunned, I asked him "What did you say?" and he repeated the sentence. "I said, I am feeding the bacteria and fungi. You know, I am putting some dead leaves on these mushrooms so they can decay them". I stammered out an ok and went back into the house. I almost choked on a laugh when it dawned on me that he was re-enacting something we had studied in his science lessons recently. We had covered information about forest life and one subtopic we covered was bacteria and fungi and how they break down dead plants and animals.
To someone who was not there when the everyday routine got monotonous and endured the reluctance of a child to "do the necessary thing", such a story might sound pretty uninteresting, but it lit up my day and made me feel  as if maybe, just maybe, I have been doing something right.
I say, Yeaaa! for  bacteria and fungi (or anything else that  catches his interest).

The photos were taken in our yard. There are lots of all different kinds but this is the most unusual. Nita
