Learning to Cook

by Wanda Lynch

I first started  learning to cook when I was about 11.  I lived with my aunt and she started me peeling potatoes.  I took just a little too much peel off though!!!  Once a week I had to help with dinner.  Then I started taking home economics in junior high and high school.  I learned most of the basics such as measuring and reading recipes from home ec.  Jay has been my guinea pig though and luckily he is pretty easy to please!  His mother has taught me more than anyone.  She gives me old family recipes and I have learned through trial and error every since.

The biggest joke in the family is the year I cooked Thanksgiving dinner all by myself.  Jay's family all came over.  When Jay's mom asked me why I didn't stuff the end of the turkey, I told her it wouldn't fit.  Upon further investigation by her, she realized that I didn't take the "innards" out of the cavity.  I was so embarrassed but she just laughed and laughed!!  I didn't know there were any in there!  You can be sure that I check very carefully now!!  I enjoy cooking but I don't like making really fancy food.  Just the basics please!!!!
