When I met my husband over 26 years ago one of the
things we discussed was that we would both like to quit smoking. Over
the years we would try off and on, I stopped for eleven months using
regular chewing gum. After I started smoking again, I couldn't even talk
about quitting without a cigarette in my hand.
In 1993 I just couldn't stand it any more and saw the prescription drug Zyban advertised on tv. I talked to our pharmacist and he said that it had a 60% success rate over only 20-30% of the nicotine gum (there wasn't much offered then.) We also went over the side effects and talked it over quite a bit and took our desire to be smoke free to the Lord. My husband had smoked for over 40 years and I had been smoking for at least 20. Our doctor wrote 2 prescriptions but it was so expensive that we only had 1 filled. We followed the instructions and we quit after taking Zyban for only 1 week. We finished the pills and to this day we have not smoked once. My mother died of lung cancer 3 years ago and she smoked up until 2 weeks before she died. It's a terrible, sad and painful way to go. I know how hard it is to quit, having "quit" hundreds of times. But, it's well worth the effort to take better care of your self. Nancy Thompson
