Raising Pigs

About 1950 I was living on 8 acres in the outskirts of town. I always had a sideline to make a little extra money. I had always had a hobby of raising purebred dogs and to support this hobby, I had a boarding kennel. That is another story I will tell about later.

One day a friend came by the house. He had been visiting his parents who lived in the country. He had 2 little piglets in a burlap bag and we made a deal. He would furnish the feed if I would take care of the piglets. I put them in a small room that was vacant at the time and fed them some kind of pig ration. These little rascals loved it and when I hosed down the concrete floor they got a bath too.

I fed them leftover dog food which they loved. Occasionally, I would have more dog food that the dogs wouldn't eat and I would freeze it. ThenI would feed the pigs the frozen food. It was like feeding ice cream to kids.

We had the pigs slaughtered when the weighed about 200 lb. It didn't bother me a bit to eat the best pork I had ever tasted !!! Later on I bought baby pigs from a neighbor boy who was using them as a 4H project .
