Every Christmas my sister and her husband decorate the barns of their horse farm in south-western Iowa. Long strands of jingle bells are draped over some of the stalls, they jingle as the horses move out into the paddocks. In the hush of dusk on Christmas Eve, the lights are dim in the stable, |
the air is warm from their bodies,
breath sweet from hay and oats.
My sister and her husband have a tradition of giving sweet treats to all the horses on the Eve of our Savior's birth. Peppermint is mixed with a biscuits of special alfalfa, a dribble of molasses on top. A nicker of anticipation goes through the stable as they hear the candy canes being broken and the horses nod their heads in thanks for the wonderful treat.
