A Heartworm Medicine Warning by Bambie Myers |
I wanted to write and let you know something that I
learned the heartbreaking way. If your adult dog has heartworms and
you give it any kind of wormer, even if it's not for heart worms, it
can kill off the older adult weaker worms and get into the pulmonary
and basically put your dog in what resembles a stroke! I lost my
beautiful 9 year old shepherd in this way it was awful! We tried to
nurse him through it and at first it looked like he would pull
through. He took a turn for the worse and we had to have him put down.
It broke my heart I didn't even know he had heartworms; he didn't
exhibit any symptoms. I am a sucker for strays and discards, we
currently have 8 dogs and 2 cats.
He was the one dog that I had actually chosen and was mine, he had such strong teeth that he would eat all of his food pans we had to wind up giving him an old hubcap to use for food. Everyone always thought he was so comical carrying his hubcap around they nicknamed him the "hubcap hound". I sure do miss him and when I think that I was the one who gave him the wormer that killed him I can't hardly stand it, so, I try to think about all the other funny things he used to do and continue to take care of the ones left. Anyway I just thought it was some info that wasn't usually thought or talked about; we didn't know until the vet told us about it I thought he was having an allergic reaction. Anyway if it can save someone else from the heartache and the dog from the pain then I'm telling anyone who will listen!
Thanks, Bambie
