I have had several people email me
and ask how they could compost if they were unable to have a compost
pile. The best way I have found is to bury the scrap organic
materials directly in the planting beds. This will encourage
earthworms in that area, and in just a few days or weeks at the most,
it will break down into good crumbly compost just like in a compost
pile. Do not bury too much in one place and keep it at
least a foot away from you plants (this is to keep from disturbing the
roots of the plants more than anything else). Also remember do
not use meat scraps, or bread in your compost. If you do not
want to dig in your garden beds for fear it will ruin some of your
plants, just tuck the compost under the mulch around the plants and it
will decompose there also. If you have earthworms in your
garden, you do not have to worry about smell, they will take care of
it in just a matter of days. I am constantly amazed at how much
compost and organic material the soil can consume. Especially
here in our hot state of Texas. It seems we can never get to
much compost or organic material in the soil. In fact it is just
the opposite. We seem to never be able to get enough into the
soil.
