Fleas and how to live without them

PS... try garlic oil for the fleas, crush garlic into a container of cheap oil from the grocery store and then spray it all over where the fleas are...they'll run away somewhere else. (This is from Kathy E. in New York)

I had given some advice on fleas to a lady who wrote in for help. Of course, I recommended the remedy listed below but it made me realize that it is still just the garlic that gets rid of the fleas. We are going to town this coming Saturday and I plan to look around the pet product section at Wal-Mart. I might just find something better. I know what works well and it doesn't even mention fleas on the label. To get the fellows to consume enough, I must crush them and mix the powder with their food.

Over a year ago, Kathy Vilseck (The Scrubbie Lady) suggested we try using what she used for her dogs. Brewers Yeast with Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Garlic.

I called all over Abilene (Texas) and the only place that carried it was Pam's Pets. It is the Excel (8in1) Brand.

On the label it says Provides Proteins, Zinc and Biotin for Healthy Sink and Coat. Also, Helps Reduce Shedding. It doesn't say so but it eliminates fleas.

When I first started using the supplements, the pups were small. I should have known from those HUGE paws that they were just beginning to grow. I tried what the directions said about putting a tablet in their food and they'd eat it along with the food. I'd go back to find the tablet in the bottom of the bowl. Now, how do they do that. So I have a routine at food time. I crush the tablet(s) with the backside of a big spoon and turn it into powder. Mix it up with the wet food or gravy and they eat it all.

A big bottle lasted a very long time (600 tablets) but finally we had to go back for more. We were out for about 3 weeks. In that time the fleas got so bad you could look at Beau and see the fleas jumping around. Probably 2 dozen per inch. Randy bought some of the liquid you put on the pet's skin and it was suppose to kill them all. It didn't even slow them down. So Randy made an emergency trip back to Pam's Pets. They only had the smallest size out on the shelf so he asks when they will have the bigger size. The sales girls says that she thinks they just got it in and it's in the back room. Okay. Then he has to ask if she can get one and he will buy it instead. Oh, okay. It's a trip very out of the way and they rarely have what we are looking for so we don't go very often for anything.

I had tried 4 tablets in the morning and 4 in the evening but that had them both throwing up the food. Not good. So we have gone back to 6 a day total. Works fine and no fleas.  The directions say one per ten pounds of animal. Well, Beau easily weighs 100 pounds but the 6 in a day works just fine.

I did sprinkle sulfur around the dog's area and on the doggies themselves but it didn't do a lot. There are no longer ants in the space but the fleas are not long gone.

The doggies do still itch and scratch but they don't break the skin and the fleas are history. Back when Beau and Sammy had mange so bad, I have to believe that the supplements helped them get well. It was the lard and sulfur that healed the mange but the supplement helped make them healthy and grow back their beautiful hair.
