Following is a list of things I have learned in my 67 years of gardening. Some are tongue in cheek and others are some sound advice I have either learned on my own, or have been given by other gardeners I respect. |
(1)
Every gardener has failures at some time or another. Do not let
a failure defeat you. Learn from your mistakes and try again and
again if necessary.
(2)
Gardening is hard work, and as a result it is excellent exercise.
(3)
Gardening is relaxing and fun.
(4)
Any soil, no matter how poor, can be made productive with time and
lots of compost.
(5)
Proper and timely watering is more important than fertilizer.
(6)
Tomatoes always look better in the seed catalogs.
(7)
Taking your first bite of your very first vine ripe tomato is the high
light of the tomato season.
(8)
Every child should get dirt under their fingernails and chicken manure
between their toes before they grow up.
(9)
Healthy plants are less susceptible to insect attacks than unhealthy
ones.
(10) Do
not be afraid to experiment with new ways to raise things.
Experimenting keeps your mind active and keeps you young.
(11)
Flowers (especially marigolds) make for a more attractive vegetable
garden, and also helps ward off insects.
(12)
Weeds and grass grow faster than vegetables. They also rob your
vegetables of valuable nutrients and moisture.
(13)
Mulch is a gardeners best friend when it comes to keeping the soil
friable, moist, and prevents most weeds and grasses from coming
up. Those that do come through the mulch are easy to remove with
just your fingers. The best way to defeat weeds in any area is
with a thick mulch.
(14)
Making a compost pile can become addictive.
(15)
Okra seed sprout more readily if they are soaked in bleach for one
hour before planting.

Gardening
