January 2006
Today it was actually 68 degrees! I opened the kitchen door to the yard and everyone flooded out. Liam, Gavin and Tristan. Gus and Hero. Lucy and Calesta. I don't usually let Lucy and Calesta out when Tristan is out. A 85 pound 10 month old puppy doesn't stop too quickly when 2 ducks get in his path. Lucy and Calesta get the worst of it, being ran over from someone who is trying to stop isn't fun. Although trying to keep two ducks inside when everyone else is running outside isn't easy. Calesta stands at the door straining to see out the window. She stretches her body as far as she can and looks pitiful. Lucy performs her "outside dance." Bobbing her head in one direction then the other, quaking at the same time. I decided since I would be outside they would stay close to me. I needed to clean up the yard and started raking. The autumn leaves I piled up around my fence line had been blown around too many times; there has been many warm, windy days in January. I started raking and repiling leaves. Lucy and Calesta followed me around digging into the "new" piles. Liam, Gavin and Tristan were following one another around marking "their" territory. Those sparrows are such intruders! The little birds are used to the dogs charging out of the house to the line of bushes. The Sparrows go over to the other side of the bush. It's on the neighbors side so the dogs can't reach them. The birds sit there watching the dogs leaping into the air trying to reach them; it's free entertainment! Liam decided to create something to bark at. Gavin charged over to join Liam on his patrol, Tristan got so excited he didn't know what to do. He jumped around in place behind Liam and Gavin. He has no concept of barking at nothing and doesn't get it. Yet he knows something is going on if the older dogs are barking. At Liam's first bark Gus and Hero panic and their fur rises on their backs. They run for the door and escape inside. Lucy and Calesta panic and look at me before they start running for the door. It's too much for Tristan and he runs after the ducks. Who then begins to scream because they are being chased. as they try to run faster, never thinking of flying. I'm running after Tristan yelling not to chase Lucy and Calesta. Thankfully they made it inside a few feet in front of Tristan who was a few feet in front of me. Gus, Hero, Lucy and Calesta make it to their individual safe spots. I get Tristan's attention and run outside with him following me. I turn around and shut the door. I'm glad puppy's have short attention spans. He runs after Liam and Gavin who have gone on to something else. I pick up the rake and continue on...... today was a good day....no one was run over by a huge, puppy body..
