The Yard- March, 2006

Today was a little warmer. It has become cold again so it's nice to have 46 degrees. I stood in the back yard and looked at all the prospective mud.
At least it's not the deep mud that is notoriously in front of a pasture gate.
It sucks in your boots as you try to get to the horses, who are watching and waiting for you  to get too close. I think the horses are watching to see how humorously it will look when your boot comes off and your foot sinks into the cold mud. They probably enjoy the entertainment. While you're tugging at your boot, as the mud is sucking at it harder, and hopping around on one foot loosing your balance.....you got to admit it would be entertainment.

So back to my muddy yard....I figure I'll turn over the top layer of dirt... throw down grass seed and throw compost on top of it. Between the dogs, ducks, neighbor's cats, wild birds and the visiting skunk I will be happy for any grass to grow. I may even try fencing off small sections of the yard and laying the grass seed.

I'm actually more interested in the Moon flowers I'm going to plant. I have a low, wrought iron fence that surrounds the front yard. I think the Moon flowers will look lovely traveling along the fence line; my neighbor doesn't care what I plant to cover the fence. My daughter wants to plant the front yard, flower garden again.

Last year it was wild flowers that came in an expensive package. The  flowers couldn't be expensive... they're wild, it must have been the packaging. This year she's talking of black and white flowers shaped as the Yin and Yang symbol. It's a creative idea but unless one is in an 18 wheeler or a plane the symbol won't be realized.

I'd like to plant Gladiolas. All different colors mixed together. I usually plant dark colors in the back and light colors up front. When planted at different days the colors bloom one after the other. It looks so beautiful.

So to my pending mud...it's supposed to be 70 degrees this weekend a good time to dig up the back yard. I'll watch how everyone reacts to the top layer being dug up. Depending on how they react will depend on how I plant the grass seed. It definitely will be muddy enough to easily turn over the dirt.
