Purple Hyacinth Bean
"This ornamental is also called the "Thomas Jefferson Bean" supposedly because Jefferson grew this bean at Monticello. Its Latin name is Dolichos lablab, and it is an annual vine that is well-suited for mailbox posts and trellises. Its flowers are light pink. They produce seed pods that are bright purple, hence the plant name. The seeds are dusky black with a white strip down the middle, quite an ornamental in their own right! The bean is not particularly edible, but the purple hyacinth bean makes an eye-catching vine for your summer pleasure. " ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
Pre-1802, the same variety grown by Thomas Jefferson.
Beautiful ornamental climbing bean with purple stems and foliage. The
pink-purple flowers are borne above the foliage and develop into
reddish-purple pods. Grows 10 to 20' depending on conditions. Thick
foliage cover makes a good screen. Especially recommended for arbors. You cannot make a trellis too big for these beautiful plants. They add a wonderful addition to the courtyard and barn. They are strongly recommended for any ornamental garden or arbor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
You'll have color all summer long from the purple, velvety bean pods, the purple & white flowers, or the beautiful foliage. Multi-use: makes a quick screen on a fence or trellis, a unique hanging basket, or an unusual ground cover. Hyacinth bean is a legume and will enrich your soil with nitrogen. |
