What a lousy year for the garden. About the time I would have been working the soil, Randy went in for his surgery. He didn't get to help with the gardening and I spent my time trying to help him not do things he shouldn't be doing. He is getting a clean bill of health from his surgeon as his other hernia is getting worse every time he lifts on something heavy. Not good.

Right now, the garden is giving us all the tomatoes we can eat. The 5 foot tall trellises are puny as the vines go over the tops and cascade along the pathway. Randy was able to get the line cutter running and take out the sticker plants that have kept me out of the pea patch. They have little beans on them about a inch long. Yummy. We may get some after all.

I actually planted some Zinnia seeds the other day. We had a rain yesterday so they won't need more rain until tomorrow. Or watering. The sunflowers are doing great though. I'd asked Arlene about cutting them for indoors but what I ended up with were drooping within 2 hours and in the trashcan by morning. Oh well. I will stick to Zinnias.

The tomato baby seedlings are looking good and loving the artificial light and the warmer temps will do them lots of good. I got the lavender seeds in and will get a few more things into dirt tomorrow.

I've not made the time to start getting out to the garden beds and doing any work but I got Randy to start up the brush cutter. I made a nice pathway to the area where the new chicken house will be. Randy wants to get 50 baby chicks soon and that will sure be lots of fun.

I need to spend some time in the little greenhouse to see if anything is going to come back this year. With so many hard long freezes, it's hard to know what has survived. It is mostly mums but also the Lantana and the unknown tree.

About 10 days ago I put the tomato seeds into soil. Today when I looked they have now sprouted. So the season has officially begun.

This year we have ordered and are only trying the Parks Whopper. No more of the "patio" which Randy didn't realize was a small tomato that he wouldn't eat. So we can concentrate on something he knows he likes. Parks Whopper has proven itself a fine variety for our heat and season.
