I was delighted to spot a lizard today. The ants are already out and about so the lizards will have plenty to eat. Yesterday I was on my way to the chicken coop to gather eggs. As I get within about 20 feet of the yard, I see a fairly big bird drop down onto the brush pile in between me and the fence of the yard. All sorts of bird shrieking noise made me realize that this was a hawk that I was watching. I screamed at the bird to go away and it did. The little birds were all so happy that every time I pass now, they sing their thank you songs. So sweet. The bird wasn't big enough to be a problem for the chickens but not a welcome visitor. The little birds hang out there to get the seeds the chickens don't eat. For a week now, I've been hearing the turkeys. It's that time of the year when the male calls the ladies to line up for his services. Randy said that he had to wait for a group of about 40 to finish crossing the road to the neighbor's pasture. I'd gone out one afternoon to spot a group of a dozen females out in our yard. Since they were headed for Lady's space, I chased them back the way they'd come. She needs no snacks but they used to come up to the yard and would strip the Pampas grass seeds from the stalks. Not now.

I saw 2 frogs last night and was greatly surprised. The last I'd seen were about 3 weeks ago when it had rained. The cold temps had chased them underground and suddenly, I didn't see any at all. For so long there had been one every 2 feet of space. I would have to wait for them to cross my path so I wouldn't step on one. Randy said that they were all over the roads, even the county road. Made a bad crunching noise when he ran over them in the truck. The butterflies visiting the hummingbird feeder were gone when it got really cold but with these warmer days, they are back again. The nectar level continues to drop but at a very slow rate. There are wasps and bees around everywhere but only one today on the feeder. I've not heard the geese moving in for the winter yet. We often don't see them at all, just hear their noisiness. Such a sweet sound. Just wish be had a big big pond for them to enjoy. There had been owls calling until about 2 weeks ago and nothing lately. Do they go south for the winter? I do not know. I don't miss them until I realize they are not making any noise. That could be a mating call and this is not the season. Who, who. |
