and Fall and the beginning of Winter

It was the even of the 8th and we were watching TV when there were owl noises from two owls. Loud and in the trees close to the house. Back and forth, they seemed to be conversing for the longest time. Then it was over. Don't know if they'd planned the evening and went on or what.

On Thursday the 23rd, I heard the geese. Low to the ground but circling and getting settled in for the evening. What a wonderful sound. But I do still wish we had a big old pond for them to enjoy during the winter while they are here. They will be here anyway and there is a man made lake nearby but I'd sure like to see them floating around. It does sound that there are more than years past. That is a good thing.

It has been 4 weeks now since I heard a Whippoorwill call. It was the day before Beau died and was an oddly distressed sound. I had not heard him call in over a week and wondered if his season was over. He had made the most distant of rounds and hopefully made lots of babies.

Until about a week ago, I had been hearing lots of owls and the occasional Dove. Two weeks before that, the turkeys had been active and noisy. Without the noises of the puppies, it is so oddly quiet.

I have not see one Roadrunner this year and I suppose it is because of the increased rain. We were invaded by blackbirds about a week ago. The came up in front of the shop first and then over to the water pans outside my window. They took turns moving in around the pans to drink their fill. They were here 2 or 3 days and then were gone. Moved on to somewhere else.

This past Thursday, that would be April 17th, I was out on my nighttime chores and heard the first Whippoorwills of the season. Such a delightful noise. His calls were answered by 5 or 6 birds and some of those very distant. Last night I heard some but extremely remote. Still a delightful sound.

During the day now I hear lots of bob-whites. Loud to call others and let them know where he is.
