The Sights and Sounds

The Whippoorwills are having a long and happy season. Occasionally, I have heard their radar sounds as they fly around the yard during the day. They use the noises to maneuver during the daytime as well as at night. And it was not during their active mating time so they must stay around all the time.

There isn't usually much happening in the dark of night but lately, there have been the owls. For the last 2 months, there have been their calls back and forth usually from one side of the house to the other. They'll go on for hours and then quiet. But in the last 3 weeks, there has been another owl voice. It is not as loud, it is a smaller bird... a baby bird and mom and dad are teaching young one how to hoot, hoot like a big owl.

The Whippoorwills have not yet begun their night songs. It will be summer before they start and we are still having the occasional freeze or very close to it.
