Five Spice Powder
Make your own Chinese Five spice powder seasoning mix using either ground or whole spices Ingredients: 1 tsp. ground Szechwan pepper 1 tsp. ground star anise 1-1/4 tsp. ground fennel seeds 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. ground white pepper Preparation: Combine all ingredients in small airtight container. Store in a cool, dry place.
Nita's Note: We tried a recipe once that called for the Five Spice Powder and threw it out, it was terrible. Or at least we sure didn't like it. We made the dish without the Five Spice Powder and it was just fine.
Then we were making the fried chicken wings again and I noted the recipe called for five-spice powder. So, I did a search to find the recipe and see just what was in there. I opted for using the white pepper and some salt. And it was delicious. Now, I wonder why not uses boneless chicken thigh meat for less work and quicker cooking. So good.
Just make sure you actually like the ingredients before you add a spice mix to your food.
