Full Circle:

When we left Britain I figured we were leaving certain things behind and for a while we had, but since moving to “The Acreage,” I feel as though we are back where we left off in Britain.

Our last home we owned in Britain was on Pembroke Street in Appleby.  I also lived on Clifford Street through my teenage years; the first house we bought as a married couple was on Bellevue Road, plus we lived on Murton Close.

When we walked into “The Acreage,” it had a feeling of “home” despite the dirt.  The reason why, well the outside of the house is stone built, like the house on Pembroke Street.  Everywhere you look inside is the original wood trim and floors, plus the high ceilings, like Pembroke Street.  It has a wood fire; well Pembroke Street’s, was a coal fire, until we replaced it with a gas fire.  Now every time I clean out the wood burning stove in this house I think back to the days of cleaning out the coal fires we had on Britain.  I am also reminded daily of how dirty coal/wood fires are by the dust!

Finally the attic, well that reminded me of Clifford Street.  Growing up I had the attic bedroom on and off.  It had narrow windy stairs, just like the ones in this house.  It brought back many memories of the times I fell down those rotten stairs.  The funny thing was, while everyone was gingerly walking up and down those stairs in this house, I was the only one who “ran” up and down them without a care.

To get to the stairs to the attic you had to go through the bathroom which wasn’t the most convenient of situations; so we have pulled those old stairs out and replaced them with a new set of stairs on the upstairs landing.    We have also stripped this attic bare, as it was plaster and lather walls, and had no insulation; we have since insulated it and put in another window.

It’s funny how little things bring back so many memories.
