SCHOOL TIME MEMORIES Whenever I go to the closest town to us, I have to go past the school in the photo. Its so unusual as it is a two storey school. It was built in 1890 and closed in 1968; it is now someones home. I will be writing more about this school in a post on my blog. That school reminds me of my time at Appleby Primary School, as it had an entrance for the boys and an entrance for the girls, just like the Primary School has. I dont have too many memories of my days at primary school, but here are some of them. I remember getting the small bottle of milk everyday. Although I dont remember if we paid for it or not? I remember get rapped on the knuckles with a ruler by the teacher as my embroidery wasnt the neatest. Can you imagine what would happen nowadays if that happened? I also remember walking across the road to the canteen everyday for our lunch. One thing I remember looking forward to was tapioca pudding or frogs spawn as we used to call it. I loved that along with rice pudding, because we got to have rose hip syrup on the top of it, and I adored rose hip syrup. I havent had rose hip syrup since I left school. For a number of years we lived at the Garbridge Hotel in the houses there, and I walked back and forward to school. Walking along Roman Road, or the Top Road, as we used to call it was dangerous at the best of times, as it was so narrow and the hedgerows were so high. I dont remember walking with anyone else to school, although there were other children who lived in the houses. The houses by the way were converted into hotel rooms, and owners accommodation. In fact its the owners accommodation that we lived in at the time. While I was writing this column, I was looking online for more information about Appleby Primary School, and came to a dead end. If anyone knows of where I can find out more of the history of Appleby Primary School, could they let me know in the comment section, please?
