British or Canadian?

I am proud to be British and I am proud to be Canadian; however sometimes it can be confusing.

The last time we visited Britain was confusing.  There was me, dh and my dad.  We all travel with Canadian passports, so of course we had to go in the “foreigner’s” line up, which seemed a bit strange as we sound as British as the next person.  In filling out the card you need to enter the country, my dad and I got into an argument about whether we are British or Canadian.  He said we are British first, I said no we are Canadian, as we are carrying a Canadian passport.  I know I ended up putting Canadian and probably my dad put British.

We love to visit the southern United States, especially Tennessee.  They are the warmest, friendliest people out there, and the scenery especially in the Smoky Mountains is just gorgeous.  They just adore the British accent.  I mean I can chit chat away to them for ages, as they love the accent.  However, because of that they think we live in Britain.  After explaining to them no we live in Canada, we are Canadian and getting the most confused looks, I finally figured out a good answer for them and everyone else who asks where we come from.

We are British born Canadians.

As at the end of the day, I am proud to have been born in Britain, but am equally proud to be a Canadian citizen.  I also think we are very lucky to be dual citizens, some countries don’t allow that.  Which brings up another issue; would we have given up our British citizenship to be a Canadian citizen?  That is something I can’t answer, and hopefully never have to answer, as that is something I think I would struggle doing not being British.  Does that make me selfish? Probably, I want it all, but who can blame me?  I am lucky to be a citizen of two great countries……….
